Comprehensive instruction at the student’s pace and an intimate learning environment makes the Carlin Academy the private finest art instruction in the Philadelphia area.
Serious training for serious students.
At Carlin Academy, you start with basic drawing skills and build in a logical progression to mastery of painting color and composition. Classes hold up to 10 students, each working on his or her own project. As you master one technique, you move to the next. Master painter and instructor Neil Carlin works with each person individually, providing guidance, encouragement and a lively ongoing commentary that makes the class fly by.
Carlin Academy is a judgment-free zone. It's always assumed you're doing your best, and Neil works with you where you are to get to the next place.
This is an old-school approach. Neil likes to talk with you before you sign up for class. So just call and talk with him to get started: 484-574-9200. Or you can email Neil at firstname.lastname@example.org
In the Drawing program, you start with flat copies and progress to perspective and volume. You'll build your skill by moving through increasingly advanced challenges. The final project is a fully-rendered, exact drawing of a classical cast.
One session (8-week, 3-hour class) is $310.00. You can sign up for as many sessions within a season as your schedule permits.
Expect to take many Drawing sessions before moving on to Painting.
Learn the fundamental techniques of oil painting while achieving mastery of the three components of color – value, hue and chroma. You'll advance from monochromatic study to full color painting along a logical, step-by-step path. Projects include volume study, cast painting, color wheel construction, simple to complex still life arrangements, and a self-portrait.
Each 8-week, 3-hour class is $310.00. You may take as many classes per semester as your time and budget permit.
When you've demonstrated proficiency in all the fundamentals, you are invited to join the portrait class with live model. This 12-week program is offered intermittently and is $560.
As with every class, Neil provides extensive, personalized instruction to each student in the class, meeting you where you are and dealing with your particular issues.

The Carlin Academy of Fine Art offers a comprehensive program of study consisting of a core curriculum and an advanced curriculum.
The core curriculum focuses on perfecting the three fundamental disciplines of visual art: drawing, painting, and composition. These programs are designed for all experience levels and are comprised of exercises progressing, step-by-step, from simple to complex subject matter. The exercises are not meant to be creative but to introduce line and color in a simplified manner, one project building upon another, until the student achieves confidence, control, and mastery. All work is done in class directly from life, and in-depth instruction is given daily. Due to the small class sizes, instructor Neilson Carlin is available at all times to guide you through the process.
The advanced curriculum, which includes portraiture, still life, and landscape, allows students who have successfully completed the core curriculum to apply their newfound skills in a chosen area of concentration. Projects consist of both in-studio and at-home assignments.
Weekly, in-studio courses are offered in three semesters from October to May. The fall semester is from October to December (12-weeks/$480), the winter semester is from January to February (8-weeks/$320), and the spring semester is from March to May (12-weeks/$480). Tuition is for one 3-hour class per week for the duration of the semester. You may take as many classes as your time and budget permit.
Finally, weekend workshops and online classes are offered throughout the year on a variety of subjects for those who cannot attend weekly classes. Check the schedule below for workshops, online classes, and their prices.
For in-studio classes, Neilson recommends a short studio visit to get a sense of the curriculum and environment before signing up. Feel free to call him and arrange a visit –
